- NATIONAL LIBRARY NEWSPAPER DIGITIZATION PROGRAM
The
National Library of Australia launched the Australian
Newspapers digitization (Beta) program in July 2008. Articles from various
newspapers between 1803 and 1954 are being digitized. Members of the public
have enhanced over 2 million lines of electronic text in over 100,000 articles.
This can be done anonymously or after creating a login. Anyone can get
involved, and the YRA thought that it might be advantageous to have newspaper
articles that relate to Yarralumla corrected/enhanced, especially by people in
Yarralumla. The website for searching (and enhancing/correcting) is http://ndpbeta.nla.gov.au/
Doing a search on Yarralumla, reveals some 3800 articles, which after
you select one, you can then choose to "fix", add tags and comments.
An
example. Looking up Yarralumla, there was an article in the Canberra Times on
the 15th June 1950, proposing to move the "mothercraft" centre from
the Forestry Mess Hall to elsewhere in Yarralumla. There was much more in the
short article, which was fascinating reading but had many "typos" which
were very easy to correct. Have a look. Just researching old newspaper articles
is fun and informative in itself
