GUIDING
PRINCIPLES FOR DEVELOPMENT IN YARRALUMLA On
15 and 18 March 2001, the YRA held a workshop to ascertain what residents valued
about their suburb and how they would apply those values to development, and especially
at the Yarralumla Brickworks. The Guiding Principles for development in
Yarralumla are set out below: 1.
Retain and enhance open public access to existing forested and recreation areas,
including the lake foreshore. 2.
Maintain Yarralumla as a predominantly residential suburb. Do not allow alienation
of public spaces. 3.
Development to be sympathetic with Yarralumla's character/history. Recognise a
unique lakeside setting eg low density and streetscape sensitive. 4.
Retain and enhance a sense of place and community. We value the atmosphere/history/clear
boundaries from other areas. Retain and enhance community safety/linkages. 5.
We value space for people and seek to ensure the viability and vitality of Yarralumla
village. We value both formal and infromal interaction between people. We oppose
major national events (blockbusters) of more than two days duration. We appreciate
other people (external to Yarralumla) using the suburb. 6.
Maintain the demographic mix. 7.
We need Particiatory Planning - that is clear guidelines with long term vision.
There is a need to take into account more security/certainty in planning. 8.
Trees - canopy - birds - these are valued. We want to retain heritage value in
the suburb. Building regulations should cover gardens and retention of wildlife
corridors. 9.
We value the self contained/boundary aspects of the suburb. There is a separate
quality to the suburb. 10.
We seek maintenance of infrastructure. 11.
We seek to reduce levels of through traffic and to limit internal traffic. 12.
No major development on the foreshores. |
